National awards programs recognize credit union achievements

Don't miss out on your chance to brag about the great things your credit union has done for its members and the communities it serves! Now is the time to promote your credit union's unique programs and activities by submitting your entries to the statewide competitions for the Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Desjardins credit union recognition programs. Each year CUNA and MnCUN work together to administer these prestigious awards.

With the deadline one month away, credit unions should begin completing their entries for the competition. Learn the secrets to submitting an award-worthy project, find awards checklists and more on the National Awards Programs section of the Network website. A brief description of each award is below:

  • The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award recognizes credit unions that promote social responsibility, focusing on external projects and activities that benefit the community.
  • The Louise Herring Award for Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award program recognizes the practical application of the credit union philosophy in daily internal operations.
  • The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award program recognizes the leadership of individual credit unions and chapters to promote youth financial education.
  • The Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award program honors credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers age 18 and older.
The deadline to submit entries is Monday, July 16. More information about each award and entry forms are available on the Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Desjardins pages of the website. MnCUN PR efforts featured at national conference

The Network's public relations initiatives were showcased last week during an American Association of Credit Union Leagues' conference for communication professionals. MnCUN Director of Communications Rachel Anderson and MnCUN Communications Specialist Kelli Baxter shared the Network's media and public relations strategies and tactics during a session focused on media outreach strategies.

Focusing on media relations activities, Anderson explained how the Network builds solid relationships with local reporters. She highlighted how MnCUN uses reporter meetings, media pitches and letters to the editor to ensure that credit unions remain prominent in reporters' minds. She also discussed the media bootcamp training sessions the Network periodically holds to train credit unions on how to effectively interact with the media.

During her portion of the presentation, Baxter provided league communication professionals an overview of MnCUN's Bankziety campaign. She explained how this campaign uses a microsite, social media tools, and media relations activities to present Minnesota credit unions as the cure to consumers' financial stresses. She also discussed the campaign's video series, which tells the story of four individuals who have turned to credit unions.

Credit unions invited to be part of Maplewood BizTown event

Junior Achievement is inviting credit unions to be part of its BizTown event in Maplewood on Monday, July 30. BizTown encompasses financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship curriculum to provide students in grades four through six with a solid foundation of business, economics and free enterprise education.

Students who participate in BizTown receive a combination of in-class learning and a daylong visit to the learning lab in Maplewood. At the learning lab, students experience a simulated town experience where they learn about their role in the community and the local economy. During the simulation, students have the opportunity to attend town meetings and vote, manage a company, use banking services, earn a pay check, pay taxes, buy goods and services and much more.

To run this simulation, Junior Achievement needs local businesses and financial institutions to participate in the July 30 BizTown event. Network webinar archives available

Did you know that your credit union has access to on-demand training on the Bank Secrecy Act, dormant accounts, increasing member loyalty, minor accounts and many other topics? With MnCUN's webinar archives, your credit union can create its own educational library. These CD-ROM archives feature recordings of live webinars held in 2012 that focus on a variety of topics pertinent to professionals and volunteers of all levels.

Each recording includes the session's original audio/visual presentation, the question and answer portion, and the webinar handouts. Credit unions can show these "off-the-shelf” training programs at staff and board meetings and can also use them for future training.

CD-ROM archives are only $209 and can be purchased up to six months after the original session date. CUNA webinar to focus on online banking for Hispanics

As part of its webinar series focused on adapting products and services to meet the needs of Hispanic members, CUNA is hosting a free June 27 webinar focused on delivering financial information to Hispanics online. Each hourlong webinar in the series offers credit unions ideas and best practices for reaching – and best serving – Hispanic consumers in local communities across the country.

The June 27 session "Are Hispanics Accessing Financial Information Online?” will investigate recent statistics about Hispanics and technology. Attendees will learn about relevant ways to deliver online content and financial information.

The last webinar of the series will be held on Wednesday, July 18, and will focus on delivering financial education to Hispanics. In addition, credit unions can view archived versions of other webinars in the series that were held earlier this year.
