Register today for MnCUN's Marketing & Media Bootcamp

MnCUN is excited to announce the agenda for its Marketing & Media Bootcamp on Oct. 25-26. This conference will help credit unions strengthen their marketing, media relations and business development efforts to distinguish themselves as the smarter financial choice.

This two-day educational event will provide credit union marketers, CEOs and business development professionals insight on ways to highlight the vibrant credit union movement. Day one of the conference will focus on marketing and consumer engagement techniques that can give credit unions the competitive edge. Attendees will explore engagement banking and investigate ways to engage members through a variety of channels. Day two will center around media relations and business development best practices. Learn about how to track business development progress, build beneficial partnerships and make effective news pitches. Attendees will also hear from a panel of Twin Cities newspaper, radio and magazine reporters.

Additionally, on Thursday night, credit union professionals will have the opportunity to participate in a Crew event. To be held from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Sky Deck Sports Grille & Lanes in the Mall of America, this event will feature an evening of networking, dinner and bowling. The event is free for those attending the bootcamp, and other Crew members can attend the event for a small fee.

2013 GAC housing block opens next week

Credit union professionals and volunteers planning to attend CUNA's 2013 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) – scheduled for Feb. 24-28 in Washington, D.C., – will be able to make lodging reservations next week. Minnesota's GAC attendees have the option of reserving a room in MnCUN's housing sub-block at the Grand Hyatt or making lodging accommodations through CUNA's Housing Bureau.

The Grand Hyatt is located three blocks from the conference venue. As one of the co-headquartered hotels, it is one of the closest hotels accepting reservations. Reservations within the sub-block are limited and are available on a first-come basis. Once the sub-block is sold out, credit unions will have to go through the CUNA Housing Bureau. MnCUN recommends reserving a room in the Minnesota block as soon as possible.

CUNA's annual GAC provides credit union professionals and volunteers from around the country the opportunity to network with peers, hear from key legislative and political leaders, and experience a variety of breakout sessions on credit unions' hot issues. MnCUN reminds credit unions to complete SAFE Act audits by the end of the year

MnCUN is reminding credit unions that are subject to the Secure & Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act) to complete their annual independent audit by the end of the calendar year. Credit unions affected by this regulation can contract with MnCUN Compliance & Audit Consultant Marcia Armstrong Lewis, who has the expertise to perform this audit.

The SAFE Act requires the audit to be completed by an individual who is independent of the credit union's SAFE Act program. As part of the audit of the credit union's SAFE Act program, the independent party must perform the following:

  • Evaluate the credit union's policies and procedures to ensure they contain appropriate information required by the SAFE Act;
  • Review the credit union's procedures for staff training and ensure all mortgage loan originators (MLOs) understand the SAFE Act's registration requirements;
  • Review the duties and responsibilities of employees to determine which employee must be registered and confirm the proper employees are registered;
  • Ensure MLOs are using and distributing unique identifiers to consumers properly; and
  • Evaluate management's efforts to resolve any noted violations or program deficiencies.

With more than 25 years of financial institution experience, Lewis is an expert in credit union operations and an excellent resource for the SAFE Act audit. She has hands-on experience in a diverse range of credit union positions, including risk management, internal auditing, training, compliance and operations. In addition, Lewis has been a certified compliance officer since 1997 and has been designated as a Certified Financial Services Auditor since 1998.

Fall Conference presentations available online

Credit union professionals and volunteers can now download PowerPoint presentations from MnCUN's Fall Conference, which was held Sept. 7-9. Attendees of the conference and those who were unable to attend can access these materials that provide valuable information about generating non-interest income, supervisory committee duties and the economic outlook. In addition, individuals are invited to view the Network's Fall Conference Twitter feed. Throughout the conference Network staff and conference attendees tweeted about the information they learned during the educational sessions. NCUA to host virtual town hall webinar on Oct. 4

This week the NCUA announced that it will hold a free virtual town hall webinar at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4. This session is part of NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz's ongoing effort to provide timely information about NCUA initiatives and continue an open dialogue with credit union stakeholders.

The session will feature information on the latest updates from the NCUA and will give credit union professionals and volunteers the opportunity to ask the regulator questions. Specific topics that will be covered during the webinar include:

  • Credit union industry performance;
  • NCUA's low-income credit union eligibility initiative;
  • NCUA's Regulatory Modernization Initiative;
  • The corporate credit union resolution;
  • The new Office of National Examinations & Supervision; and
  • Recently finalized and proposed rules.
