Are you under 35 (or know someone who is)? You're invited to the Capitol

Credit union professionals age 35 and younger are invited to attend The Crew event during MnCUN's Credit Union Day at the Capitol. This event provides young professionals with exclusive learning and networking opportunities during MnCUN's annual advocacy event.

The Crew is an informal, event-based networking group for young professionals who have a desire to grow in their career. During CU Day at the Capitol, participants will join representatives from MnCUN, NCUA and the Department of Commerce for an overview of the credit union examination process and participate in a question-and-answer session prior to the regular start of CU Day. All mid-level young credit union professionals are invited to attend this exclusive event!

MnCUN's Credit Union Day at the Capitol gives professionals and volunteers the opportunity to bring the credit union message to elected officials. During the morning, attendees learn about grassroots involvement and legislative issues, receiving firsthand knowledge from elected officials about the legislative session. The afternoon consists of visits to the state Capitol to meet with representatives and senators to discuss issues important to credit unions. This year, MnCUN will be scheduling legislative visits for all CU Day attendees. Simply complete the registration form and you'll be set for the visits at the state Capitol!

MnCUN strategic alliances benefit Network & credit unions

Through its strategic alliances, MnCUN's Network Service Corporation (NSC) offers credit unions guidance on finding service providers that offer quality, member-focused products and services. In addition to fulfilling individual credit unions' service needs, these strategic alliances help to provide revenue to the Network, which in turn allows MnCUN to enhance services to members.

Currently, MnCUN's endorsed vendors provide the following services to credit unions:

  • check processing;
  • financial counseling;
  • office supply discounts;
  • ATM and branch expansion options;
  • compliance assistance; and
  • and a full suite of mortgage products and service offerings.

MnCUN encourages credit unions to consider the NSC's strategic alliances when they are seeking a new service provider. Credit unions should conduct due diligence on these and other service providers and choose the organization that is right for their credit union. However, if a strategic alliance company is comparable to another organization, selecting the NSC-endorsed vendor helps to return revenue to the NSC.

Three highlights of the 2012 Bankziety campaign

Through the use of Facebook, websites and contests, this year’s Bankziety campaign made an impact on Minnesota consumers by providing education about credit unions and encouraging them to make the switch. Using funds and expertise from the Minnesota Network Advertising Program (MNAP), the Network used the Bankziety campaign to engage people in conversation about their financial lives and the things about finances that cause frustration or give them anxiety.

This online consumer awareness campaign saw a number of successes, using a new approach to present credit unions to younger consumers, especially those ages 21-35. The campaign success included:

  •  Website traffic increased 700% – As of the end of November, visits to Bankziety.com increased to approximately 1,500 visits a month, which was a 700 percent increase since the campaign launch in April. The Bankziety website contains information about the credit union difference, financial tips and resources, and a widget that helps consumers find a credit union to join.
  • Facebook fans boosted from 1,500 to 4,050 – The Bankziety campaign used Facebook ads to encourage consumers to "like" the Minnesota Credit Unions Facebook page. Fans of the page periodically receive financial tips and information about credit unions and also are given the opportunity to participate in contests and other activities.
  • Facebook "sharers” reached 225 – In October, the Bankziety campaign included a "Life’s Big Decisions” contest on MnCUN’s Facebook page. This contest asked consumers to vote on a choice pertaining to various life stages. Each time a person voted, they received an entry into a drawing for $100. Through this contest, 225 people shared information about credit unions with friends and family and increased awareness of the Minnesota Credit Unions Facebook page.

MnCUN and the MNAP Committee will continue to build upon the Bankziety successes in 2013 as the campaign evolves to include new components to expand consumer awareness of credit unions. Postal CU volunteer honored with Foundation CU Builder Award

Walter Noreen, former volunteer at Postal Credit Union in Woodbury, was posthumously honored with the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation's (MnCUF's) Credit Union Builder Award this month. This distinction recognizes those who have dedicated time and energy to building the credit union movement. Nominations for this award are made by credit unions and other organizations in honor of or in memory of a significant individual who has been instrumental in their success.

Walter Noreen devoted his life to helping others and embodied the credit union philosophy of "people helping people.” An Assistant Postmaster, Noreen was first elected to the Board of Directors of St. Paul Postal Employees Credit Union (now d/b/a Postal Credit Union) in 1967. Among his many affiliations, Noreen served as District Governor of Lions International and was an active member of the St. Paul Park/Newport Lions Club. He helped found the St. Croix Lions and helped create Camp New Hope. Noreen took an active role in politics and was a strong advocate for the credit union movement and greater good of all. After more than two decades of volunteer service, he retired from the board in 1990.

 

Noreen joins 13 other individuals who have been honored over the past five years with the MnCUF's CU Builder Award. The names of the recipient and the contributing credit union are permanently displayed in the Minnesota Credit Union Network's lobby through a display that serves as a tribute to the CU Builder recipients. The honorees (or their families, in the case of a memoriam contribution) receive acknowledgment from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, and donors are also listed online and in the Foundation's annual report.

 

"Through the Credit Union Builder Award, Minnesota recognizes and honors those who have made an impact on the credit union movement,” said MnCUF Chair Pat Brekken. "Through the generous donation of their time, energy and resources, these individuals have exemplified the true meaning of the credit union philosophy.”

In today's ever-changing financial environment, it is imperative that credit unions invest in staff and volunteer development. To assist credit unions in tackling this challenge, MnCUN offers Webinars On Demand, which enables individuals to learn at a time and place that is convenient for them. These sessions are available via web link and provide credit unions the option of training multiple individuals at one time.

Contribute to MNAP in 2013

Consumers around the state are eager to learn about credit unions and why they are the smarter financial choice. In 2013, the Minnesota Network Advertising Program (MNAP) will coordinate initiatives that further its mission to help credit unions tell their story. MNAP is a voluntarily-funded, cooperative advertising program for Minnesota credit unions. This committee's activities benefit all credit unions by promoting the uniqueness of financial cooperatives and spreading the word about the credit union difference.

In 2012, the Minnesota Network Advertising Program (MNAP) coordinated two main initiatives that helped credit unions tell their story.

  • Bankziety Campaign
    This statewide consumer awareness campaign utilized funds, support and recommendations from the MNAP Committee. Through a Bankziety website, the Minnesota Credit Unions Facebook page, and other online delivery channels, the Bankziety campaign positions credit unions as the solution for consumers who are experiencing feelings of financial frustration.

  • Young Adult Research Project
    In 2012, MnCUN and MNAP worked with the Filene Research Institute to perform Minnesota-specific research and identify opportunities for credit unions to attract young adults. Results were delivered to credit unions through a research paper, presentation and four-part webinar series. 

Next year, MNAP's activities will closely align with MnCUN's broader public affairs and awareness strategy, using the Bankziety platform to communicate that credit unions are trusted, reliable and relevant financial institutions. In 2013, MNAP will fund statewide consumer research to measure Minnesotans' awareness and perceptions of credit unions, using benchmark data that was collected through a similar effort in 2010. In addition, MNAP will use a variety of radio, social media and website channels to educate consumers and public opinion leaders about credit unions. The Bankziety website will continue to encourage consumers to switch to a credit union.

Credit unions are encouraged to support MNAP's initiatives with a contribution in 2013. The annual MNAP solicitation was sent to all credit unions in conjunction with the annual MnCUN membership dues packet. MnCUN sends holiday greetings

Last week the Minnesota Credit Union Network sent its contacts a holiday video greeting. The video thanks those it has worked with over the past year and recognizes the impact its supporters have made on the credit union movement. By working together, credit unions were able to accomplish significant goals in 2012 and formed a solid foundation for growth and success in 2013. During the holiday season, MnCUN will be closed on Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, along with Tuesday, Jan. 1. Happy Holidays!
