Join your colleagues around the world in celebrating the "people helping people” philosophy and cooperative spirit of credit unions and be part of the 2012 International Credit Union (ICU) Day on Thursday, Oct. 18. With the theme of "Members Matter Most,” this year's ICU Day aims at the heart of the mission of credit unions as cooperatives that exist solely to serve members.
International Credit Union Day is celebrated the third Thursday of October each year and coincides with the United Nations' International Year of Cooperatives, a yearlong celebration that began Oct. 31, 2011, and has provided greater visibility to credit unions and other cooperatives worldwide. The first official credit union day was established in 1927, and now ICU Day celebrates the common roots of 196 million credit union members in 100 countries and their community service achievements.
The ICU Day materials below can help recognize your credit union, along with others worldwide, and spread awareness of the credit union movement. Additionally, more information on the International Year of Cooperatives can be found on the IYC pageof the Network website.
In this video, MnCUN President & CEO Mark Cummins talks about celebrating International Credit Union Day and why it's a great time to be a part of the credit union movement.

On Oct. 18, credit unions in every part of the world, from Minnesota to Malaysia, will recognize what the industry has accomplished by exemplifying the cooperative spirit. You are encouraged to use ICU Day as an opportunity to raise awareness about the great work your credit union is doing and to give your members a chance to get more involved. There are a variety of ways you can make International Credit Union Day unique to your credit union:
Sponsor a membership drive.
Invite elected officials to a "meet the members” day.
Offer loans or new share draft accounts for the same fees that the credit union charged the year it opened.
Offer your credit union as an elementary school field trip destination.
Organize a fun event to teach your staff and members about credit union history and philosophy.
