Schedule CU Day legislative appointments
Credit union advocates attending MnCUN’s March 9 Credit Union Day at the Capitol should begin scheduling legislative appointments with their senators and representatives. During this day of advocacy, attendees will meet with legislators to discuss current issues and to remind them of the role credit unions play in serving "Main Street Minnesota.”
- Identifying Your Legislators: If you are unsure of who your legislators are, visit the GREAT web site and click on the "elected officials” tab at the top of the page.
- Scheduling Appointments: Each CU Day attendee must coordinate their own legislative visits. To set up an appointment, call your legislator’s Capitol office phone number and talk to their assistant. Tell the legislative assistant you are a constituent and that you would like to set up a meeting on Tuesday, March 9 with your representative/senator between 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Register today for the MnCUN Annual Meeting & Convention
Registration is now open for the 2010 MnCUN Annual Meeting & Convention. Scheduled for April 23-24 at the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park, this conference offers credit union professionals and volunteers two days of education, networking and entertainment.
This premier credit union event will feature sessions on a wide variety of topics focused on enabling credit unions to grow and thrive in the current economic environment. Educational topics will include youth lending, leadership, growth strategies and more. In addition, the conference’s luncheons will provide insight from Ryan Donovan, CUNA’s Vice President of Legislative Affairs and Tim Harrington, President of T.E.A.M. Resources.
The conference will also feature a general session that will reveal the results of MnCUN’s statewide consumer survey, conducted in March 2010. This benchmarking research, funded by voluntary contributions to the Minnesota Network Advertising Program (MNAP), will reveal the average consumer’s knowledge of, perceptions about, and attitude toward credit unions.
As always, the Annual Meeting will feature a business meeting, tradeshow and interactive fundraisers. The event will conclude with the Saturday evening awards banquet, which recognizes credit union accomplishments anniversaries and reveals the recipients of MnCUN’s Outstanding Professional and Volunteer of the Year Awards.

MnCUN Bankruptcy Conference to be held April 6
Credit unions seeking tools and information on how to handle the recent surge in bankruptcy filings are invited to attend MnCUN’s Bankruptcy Conference on April 6. To be held in Bloomington, this conference will examine several bankruptcy issues from a variety of perspectives and provide attendees tips on how to work through these problems.
Geared toward collectors, lenders, compliance staff and CEOs, the Bankruptcy Conference will provide practical, detailed training on what bankruptcy law does and doesn't allow credit unions to do. Attendees will receive answers to common and technical bankruptcy questions, along with tips on how to protect the credit union’s rights in bankruptcy cases.

MnCUN President & CEO named to CUNA Strategic Services Board
Mark D. Cummins, MnCUN President & CEO was elected to serve on the national CUNA Strategic Services (CSS) Board during CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference held Feb. 21-25. Cummins will serve a two-year term on the CSS Board, providing insight into potential product and service solutions for Minnesota credit unions’ business challenges.
Having served in the credit union movement for 20 years, Cummins brings a wealth of experience to the board. Prior to joining the Minnesota Credit Union Network in 2007, he worked for 12 years as the President & CEO of White Crown Federal Credit Union in Denver, Colo. Cummins also has significant experience on a variety of boards, serving as Vice Chair of the Credit Union Association of Colorado Board of Directors, Chair of Colorado’s Governmental Affairs Committee, and board member of Credit Union Indirect Lending Association.
"It is an honor to be appointed to the CSS Board. I look forward to working with CUNA and other league representatives to ensure that credit unions have access to vendors that offer competitive pricing and quality products and services,” Cummins said.

Minnesota reaches 31 Shared Branching service centers
Last week Minnesota welcomed two branches of City-County Federal Credit Union to its Shared Branching network, bringing the total number of service centers in the state to 31. Through participation in Shared Branching, Minnesota credit unions can offer members the convenience of being able to access 4,000 CO-OP Shared Branching locations throughout the United States.
Through Shared Branching credit unions across the country share facilities, providing members thousands of convenient locations to perform basic financial transactions. Today, this cooperative network ranks fourth for its number of branches, behind only Wells Fargo/Wachovia, Bank of America and Chase.
"The Shared Branching network allows credit unions to offer members convenience without incurring the expense of building and staffing additional branches,” said Peter Skaalen, MnCUN Executive Vice President. "Now more than ever, it is extremely important for credit unions to effectively serve members while wisely managing expenses. Shared Branching allows credit unions to achieve both goals.”

Business Journal seeks Women in Business nominations
The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal is seeking nominations for its Women in Business project. Credit unions are encouraged to nominate a colleague for these prestigious awards, which will name 25 Women in Industry Leaders, 25 Women to Watch, and one Career Achievement Award.
The newspaper’s editors will select women who are on the rise in the Twin Cities’ corporate or entrepreneurial scenes. Nominees should have an impressive professional track record, leadership qualities, potential and drive. Winners will be highlighted in the May 21 edition of the Business Journal and will be honored at a high-profile luncheon.
Nomination forms can be obtained from the Business Journal web site. Entries must be submitted by Friday, March 19.
