Credit Union News
The "Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign has so far been a roaring success, with nearly 1 million contacts made nationwide to members of Congress. In Minnesota, credit union employees and members have sent more than 13,000 messages to our legislators urging them to ensure the continuation of credit unions’ corporate income tax exemption.
With emails, letters, postcards and social media posts, the Minnesota Congressional contingent has been bombarded by the "Don’t Tax My Credit Union” message. Now that Congress is back in session, and with plans to address a tax reform proposal in the coming weeks, we need to keep the momentum going. That’s why the Network’s Governmental Affairs team is hosting a conference call tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 19, to give some important legislative updates and introduce a new way to connect with Congress – the "Don’t Tax Phone Blitz.”
This one-day Phone Blitz is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26 and will require massive participation from our member credit unions. The Network is asking that every credit union have a designated phone available for employees and members to call out from, or encourage all employees to make calls from their desk extensions to members of Congress. The Network will make available a 1-800 number that, when dialed, will prompt people to enter their ZIP code. Then, they will be connected to the offices of their legislators. The Network will also have a short sample script for people to use, and each phone call should last no longer than a minute or two.
A simple phone call is an incredibly effective, personal appeal from constituents that will reinforce all of our other advocacy efforts so far to protect the credit union tax status. We have nearly 1.6 million credit union members and 3,800 credit union employees in Minnesota. Imagine the power of messages from even half of that number calling to tell our legislators why they should support credit unions!

The Minnesota Credit Union Network is proud to announce the winners of the 2013 Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Desjardins statewide competitions. The Network received an abundance of award-worthy entries this year and, from those, 13 have advanced to the Credit Union National Association's (CUNA’s) national competitions. These credit unions’ entries will compete with other credit unions from across the country in their respective award and asset categories.
Judging for the national contests will take place in early October. All four award programs are sponsored by MnCUN and the CUNA. The entries in Minnesota’s statewide competition are judged by a committee of another state credit union league to ensure results are fair and unbiased.
The 2013 statewide award-winners include:
Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award
Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award
Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award
Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award was created in 1987 and recognizes credit unions for the activities they coordinate that benefit the community or a specific charity. This award promotes social responsibility among credit unions by formally recognizing their achievements outside the credit union.
The Louise Herring Philosophy in ActionMember Service Award is given to a credit union for its practical application of the "people helping people” philosophy in internal operations. Created in 1990 with four asset categories, this award promotes the credit union philosophy by formally recognizing credit unions that demonstrate in an extraordinary way the application of the movement's principles in serving their members.
The Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Awards formally recognize the leadership of individual credit unions and chapters in their efforts to better educate youths and adults in financial literacy.
"Minnesota’s credit unions are dedicated to helping improve the lives of their members. This year's award-winners demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their members and communities in their efforts to fulfill needs, educate and build relationships.” said Mark D. Cummins, MnCUN President & CEO. "Each of the winning credit unions deserves this recognition, and I wish them luck in the national competition.”
The Minnesota Family Involvement Council has kicked off this year’s scholarship program, with online applications and downloadable promotion materials now available on the FIC website! In 2014, the FIC will award $10,000 in scholarships to credit union members continuing their education.
Two $1,000 scholarships and sixteen $500 scholarships will be awarded to 18 credit union members throughout Minnesota. Anyone who is a member of a credit union affiliated with the Minnesota Credit Union Network and pursuing post-secondary education in fall 2014 and spring 2015 is eligible. To apply, credit union members must complete a one-page application form and submit an essay that answers the question: "The average age of credit union members in Minnesota is 47 years old. In order to be sustainable, credit unions need to serve younger generations, as well. What can credit unions do to attract and engage young adult consumers?”
Look for more scholarship information and applications on the FIC website. The FIC is also providing online materials to help credit unions promote the scholarship program to members. Visit the Scholarships section of the FIC website to download a web banner, lobby poster, newsletter article and best practices on promoting the scholarship program.
The NCUA is hosting a special member business lending webinar geared toward small credit unions. This free webinar, which takes place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, focuses on the underwriting aspects of a successful member business lending program.
Staff from NCUA’s Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives and NCUA Region IV’s Division of Special Actions will explain the agency’s requirements for member business lending. Participants will also hear from specialists who will discuss how to start a safe and sound program.

Attend CUNA’s free Online Discovery Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 1 to gain the benefits of a face-to-face conference without leaving your desk. This year’s fourth-annual event offers 13 credit union-focused sessions that each includes video, audio and a Q&A with industry thought leaders.
