No matter what time of year, Minnesota credit union must understand the importance of being involved in the political process. More than 1.5 million credit union members reside in our state alone and have the capability to shape any election. Throughout the year, credit union professionals and volunteers are encouraged to form and cultivate relationships with elected officials and those vying for political office. It is important to make your voice heard and help elect credit union-friendly candidates to positions on the state and federal level.

2008 Credit Union Voter Guide
In the summer of 2008, the Minnesota Credit Union Network contacted every individual aspiring to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the State House of Representatives in the upcoming November election. Each candidate received a five-question survey and a “Credit Union 101” version of MnCUN’s Credit Union Courier newsletter.
The results of those surveys are included in the 2008 Credit Union Voter Guide. The Network is happy to report that almost half of the state house candidates and 100 percent of the incumbent congressional delegation responded to the survey, and all conveyed strong support for the credit union movement. Nearly 50 percent of the respondents reported being credit union members, and all agreed that protecting consumer choice of financial institutions and keeping credit unions’ not-for-profit tax status was important.
