Reporters Guide to Speaking with Minnesota Credit Unions

Who to contact for an interview

As a trade association, the Minnesota Credit Union Network is aware of the current trends and issues of the Minnesota credit union movement. The Network’s communications department welcomes any questions you may have about the credit union industry. In addition to serving as an information source, communications staff can assist you arranging interviews with MnCUN staff, including Mark Cummins, MnCUN’s President & CEO. The Network can also serve as a conduit to help you connect with credit union leaders throughout the state.

Gathering information from a credit union

When seeking a comment or information from a CEO, you will want to speak with the organization’s CEO, manager or designated spokesperson. The Minnesota Credit Union Network can assist you in making these contacts and foster relationships for current and future use.

Credit union CEOs or managers can usually be reached at their credit union office. At a smaller credit union, the CEO may have limited hours, so be sure to provide them enough time to get back to you. Larger credit unions may have a public relations department or an outside agency to handle media call.

When contacting credit unions, be sure to:
  • identify yourself
  • outline the scope of your story
  • provide a response deadline
If you are asking for statistics for your story, be sure to give the credit union enough time to compile the information. Often credit union data is only compiled on a quarterly basis, which means that the most recent information may be a couple of months old.
