Guest Speaker:  Shila Walek currently serves as the Chief Deputy Isanti County Attorney.  She has been a practicing attorney in the Isanti County Attorney’s Office for over nine years, primarily practicing in civil law, including forfeiture litigation.  She obtained her undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University in 2000 and her law degree from Hamline University School of law in 2004.  Ms. Walek’s forfeiture experience includes arguing and prevailing in Laase v. 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, 776 N.W.2d 431 (Minn. 2007), before the Minnesota Supreme Court in 2009, whereby Ms. Walek argued on behalf of the State, defending a forfeiture against the joint owner of a forfeited vehicle.

Ms. Walek will present a general overview of forfeitures, what they are and how they work; provide “best practices” for lienholders to maximize their position; give tips on how to best negotiate and work with law enforcement; and answer general forfeiture questions.
