Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union – WINONA, Minn. (January 29, 2016) – Members of Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union can enter to win cash prizes when they save money using its new prize-linked savings account, WINcentive Savings. Each time members increase the balance in their WINcentive Savings account by $25, they earn one entry into the monthly, quarterly, and annual drawings for cash prizes. Members can earn a maximum of four entries each month for the statewide drawings, and they must be Minnesota residents.

With the credit union’s recent organizational strategy focused on helping members maximize their savings potential, Affinity Plus has also invested in offering drawings exclusively for its members, giving them more opportunities to win cash prizes for saving money.

“Affinity Plus believes in helping our members develop strong, sustainable saving habits, and WINcentive Savings gives us the opportunity to do that in a new, fun and exciting way,” shares President and CEO Dave Larson. “This outcome has been achieved by credit unions from other states that have implemented prize-linked savings accounts, and we want to help our members achieve similar results. We understand many Minnesotans lack savings for short- and long-term goals and believe WINcentive will motivate members to build the balance in their accounts. It is really neat to see something as simple as a savings account have this much interest.”

Prize-linked savings models are gaining increased awareness and support by many in an effort to help more people save through the anticipation of winning additional prize money. These models have been implemented internationally, and in the United States, 11 states have passed laws to allow for prize-linked savings accounts. Last March, Affinity Plus’ Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Information Officer Keith Malbrue testified in front of the Senate Commerce Committee in support of prize-linked savings accounts using knowledge he’s gained first-hand as a Board member for Doorways to Dreams Fund (D2D). D2D is a nonprofit that works with the financial services industry, government agencies, and other nonprofit and community organizations to pilot financial products and services, build awareness of the needs of low-income communities, and advocate for inclusive social and economic policies.

“D2D has been a passionate advocate for the prize-linked savings account model and I firmly believe Affinity Plus’ members will benefit from participating in WINcentive. These accounts help motivate individuals to save by rewarding their savings behavior. This past December President Obama signed the American Savings Promotion Act into law, which removes federal barriers to broader adoption of prize-linked savings products, further strengthening national support on finding ways to improve Americans’ levels of financial literacy,” shared Malbrue.

“Prize-linked savings products have proven to engage financially vulnerable consumers in the act of saving and help them build their financial security. By injecting fun and the excitement of winning into the act of saving, prize-linked savings products have incentivized first time savers, resulted in long-term savings, and acquired new customers for financial service organizations who offer these products.”
