Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union - SAINT PAUL, MINN. (May 3, 2016) - In an effort to prepare first-time homebuyers with the information and tools needed to purchase their first home, Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union has been hosting free first-time homebuyer seminars in local branch communities to members and non-members throughout the state, including St. Paul, Roseville, Bemidji, Rochester, and St. Cloud. Mortgage loan officers from the branches and local real estate agents have been facilitating the seminars.

“One of the things we often see with members is that they have a goal of homeownership, but aren’t as familiar with the process and resources available to make their home buying experience great,” said John Simonsen, director of real estate. “As a credit union, we want to provide our members and communities with as much education as possible to help them make informed decisions about their financial situation. We also want them to be aware of the variety of products and services we have available that will help them reach the goal of home ownership.”

With an increase in members looking to purchase homes in an active real estate market, Affinity Plus recognized the importance of educating members about the different aspects of the home-buying process, including how to successfully secure financing for a home and conducting an appropriate home search based on a member’s individual needs. The credit union places a large emphasis on helping members navigate through complex financial decisions; when it comes to home-buying, keeping a member in their home is good for the community and the economy, and well-informed borrowers are likely to make better decisions about their home purchase.

Overall, the response to the seminars has been positive, and attendees have appreciated the opportunity to learn more and hear from experts in the field.

“Our members had such a variety of questions about the home buying process, and so many attendees expressed how helpful the seminar was,” said Michelle Risland, mortgage loan officer in Bemidji. “It was so great to be able to give members important information related to home-buying and to know that our efforts are positively impacting members at various stages of their lives.”

The next homebuyer seminar will be held in Grand Rapids on Monday May 9 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Area Library.
