ServPro and Affinity Plus Credit Union team up to offer community blood drive

Grand Rapids Herald-Review (May 7, 2016) - Two local businesses are teaming up for a cause they both strongly support - the American Red Cross.
On Friday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., ServPro and Affinity Plus will be hosting a community blood drive at the ServPro location, at 717 NE Fourth St., Grand Rapids. The partnership makes it easier and more comfortable for people to provide the needed blood donations - with more space and more volunteers to assist donors.
As Grand Rapids ServPro Marketing Manager Nick Henning explained, ServPro is one of few businesses in the country that is actually affiliated with the American Red Cross.
“Most times, we are the first contact with families experiencing disasters such as fires,” said Henning who explained how ServPro will connect families with the Red Cross for support in response of a disaster.
According to Henning, the Grand Rapids branch is currently the largest ServPro location in the state of Minnesota, recently expanding into the Aitkin and McGregor areas. Henning said the local ServPro teams make contact with people who have faced disasters of all kinds on a monthly basis.
Given the constant “deficit of blood and need for donations,” the ServPro employees thought it made sense to host a blood drive.
Affinity Plus stepped up to help coordinate the event as the American Red Cross is one of five Charities of Choice for the Minnesota Credit Union’s 27 branches throughout the state.
Grand Rapids Affinity Plus Branch Manager Ann Mack explained, “Because they are a Charity of Choice we work closely with the American Red Cross. And we’re happy to partner with other businesses.”
With a mission of “giving back,” Affinity Plus typically organizes two to three blood drives a year in the Grand Rapids area. However, because the credit union offices are too small for such an event, “we’ve had to coordinate the use of a bus,” explained Mack. “But ServPro has the space.”
The prior blood drives organized by Affinity Plus have typically been three-hour events, hosting about 20-30 donors. With the added space at ServPro and the combination of employees from both businesses to volunteer to staff the drive, the community blood drive on May 20 will go six hours and the hope is many more donors will be served.
As Mack added, Affinity Plus employees and members have been both volunteers and donors.
“It’s a great cause,” she said.
Donors are encouraged to call ahead to schedule a time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, May 20.
However, “we won’t turn anyone away,” said Mack, of people who decide to participate at the last minute.
