Affinity Plus renews commitment to Bemidji State University through five-year lease extension

Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union - ST. PAUL, Minn. (May 12, 2016) - Affinity Plus recently signed a new five-year lease with Bemidji State University (BSU) to retain the credit union’s branch space on campus. The university opened the request for proposals for branch space in early 2016, inviting financial institutions to present how their products, services, and approach to banking could best serve the students, faculty, and surrounding community. With four other branches on university campuses across the state, Affinity Plus’ decision to request the additional time to partner with BSU was a clear demonstration of their focus on improving the lives of members and communities.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to stay on Bemidji State’s campus, and we look forward to continued service to students, faculty, and the campus community,” said Dave Larson, president and CEO of Affinity Plus. “Being on campus provides us with a unique opportunity to not only fulfill the financial services needs of those on campus, but to also uniquely engage with students and faculty as they move through various stages of life. As a financial cooperative, we truly care about the well-being of our members and want to be there for support through both financial successes and challenges.”
The campus branch first opened in the summer of 2011 and since that time the credit union has become woven into the fabric of the university and an important source of information and financial services for students and faculty. The branch consistently participates in community and campus events and provides sponsorship of athletics and the BSU Foundation. Branch staff has also presented numerous financial education classes in partnership with various departments and professors, teaching hundreds of students about the importance of personal financial management.
“College life presents a unique set of financial decisions that students need to make, and they don’t always have the knowledge or resources to make those decisions soundly,” said Michelle Young, member advisor at the BSU branch. “We are strongly committed to providing the resources and guidance many students need to prepare themselves for financial success during their time at BSU and beyond.”
Affinity Plus also has products and services designed specifically for students to allow for a convenient yet meaningful banking experience. Some of these products include a student checking account which allows members to earn gift cards every month just by using their debit card, and a technology loan with an interest rate that can continually be reduced by maintaining a certain GPA.
“We know the lives of our members who attend, work for, or live near the campus are dynamic and unique, and we are committed to providing financial services that will meet each of their needs,” said Christine Ethen-Malterud, branch manager. “Getting to know our members’ stories is one of the most important parts of our work, and we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with these members and our community.”
