Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union - FERGUS FALLS, MINN. (May 18, 2016) - Over the weekend, almost 100 community members showed up at Lake Alice to participate in the fourth annual Lake Alice 100. The event brings people together to bike for good a good cause, challenging participants to bike 100 miles, or 87 laps around the lake. Everyone was invited to participate for no cost or registration fee, whether doing one lap or all 87, and bikes were made available to riders who did not own a bike. Affinity Plus helped sponsor the event for the fourth year in a row, committing to pledging money for every lap made around the small lake in downtown Fergus Falls.
“The idea to bring an event like the Lake Alice 100 came from a desire to bring the people of Fergus Falls together to do good things, while promoting a celebration of spring, health, community, and fitness in our town,” said Nick Mariotti, senior branch manager at Affinity Pus. “Affinity Plus is a proud member of this community and we now look forward to making a positive impact in this town each year.”
The credit union first organized the Lake Alice 100 in an effort to bring the community together in a fun, healthy, and engaging way. Each year, money raised has been used for various causes relevant to the Fergus Falls community, including funding a scholarship for a local college and bringing back a fireworks show for the community’s Fourth of July celebration. This year, money was used to support Pedal Fergus Falls, a bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group which works to improve local bicycle infrastructure. The idea to plan an event around biking is no coincidence; the city has an active cycling community and has been working to be designated as a Bicycle-Friendly Community.
“We actually have one of the highest densities of designated Bicycle Friendly businesses in the state,” said Mariotti. “Deciding to create the Lake Alice 100 was an easy way to engage people of Fergus Falls in an activity they already love while also being able to support causes that can better our community.”
