BURNSVILLE, Minn. (September 14, 2016) - In preparation for the opening of Firefly Credit Union’s first high school branch location early next year, three Burnsville High School students have spent their summer acclimating themselves to the credit union atmosphere.

The students, Cullen Kittams, Zach McGovern and Blake Robinson, all participate in Burnsville High School’s DECA program, which connects high school students to local businesses “provid[ing] realistic insight into industry and promot[ing] meaningful, relevant learning.”

The DECA students, along with their instructor Meggan Malone, have been collaborating with Firefly staff to create a branch location with the student population in mind. With teller experience under their belt, the students already have great insight into working for a financial for when the BHS branch opens.

“My experience with Firefly has been wonderful. I have learned a lot about loans and how a credit union works. I would not have been able to learn about either as easily in the classroom,” said Robinson, “I’m excited to work with students to help prepare them for a strong financial future.”

As the school year kicks off, Malone’s students are hard at work continuing their prep for the upcoming branch. This includes participation in a marketing committee, which works alongside Firefly’s Chief Marketing Officer, Marty Kelly, to plan the promotion of the new branch.

In addition, students have also partnered with Firefly staff on the planning of multiple events happening during their first semester, connecting them with businesses including Burger Jones, Memorial Blood Centers, Shred Right, and Green Lights Recycling.

“Firefly’s partnership with Burnsville High School is unique in that it provides hands-on learning experiences for students in a variety of areas,” said Kelly. “Students are gaining skills in event planning, creating marketing plans, and collaborating with businesses on promotions – all of which will be great resume builders that will set them ahead in their future endeavors.”
