Quad Community Press Publications (May 16, 2017) - Supporters hope for a sunny morning on Saturday, May 20, as Anoka Hennepin Credit Union (AHCU) hosts its first SPIRIT Walk through the SPIRIT Foundation, sponsoring eight high schools in four counties.
Registrations and donations for the walk are facilitated for the SPIRIT Foundation at www.ahcu.coop and www.crowdrise.com/2017SpiritWalk.
Saturday check-in is 7 a.m. at Bengal Stadium at Blaine High School. The walk starts at 8:30 a.m., proceeds through Bunker Hills Park and returns to the high school.
The SPIRIT Foundation was brought to life through the recognition of community need and the actions of management at AHCU. The foundation is the product of corporate social responsibility, and its primary focus is on extra-curricular school activities as well as five community service organizations with which the credit union has partner relationships.
The participating high schools are: Andover, Anoka, Blaine, Centennial, Champlin Park, Coon Rapids, Forest Lake and St. Francis, reaching the Anoka, northern Hennepin, northern Washington and southern Chisago counties.
Each school has a general fund available on the website for donations. Individual activities, coaches and community members have also created funds and have extended personal challenges to their peers. All money raised by the walk is being donated to each school; no money is being held back by the foundation.
AHCU President and CEO Jeff Claussen said the continual loss of federal and state funding to schools has put the burden of paying for after-school activities on parents. “As a parent of a daughter just graduated, I know what those extra curricular fees are,” he said.
Many public schools have fallen into the position of deciding whether they can keep an activity running. “Schools are the lifeblood of our branch communities; if they fail, we all fail,” Claussen added.
Future events for the SPIRIT Foundation may include bicycle rides and golf outings. AHCU also offers SPIRIT checking accounts for adults and students adorned with school logos to benefit its participating schools.
