Quad Community Press (May 30, 2017) - The uncooperative 47-degree rainy weather moved Anoka Hennepin Credit Union's first SPIRIT Walk out of Bunker Hills Park and into the gymnasium at Blaine High School Saturday, May 20.
Paul Allen, sportscaster for the Minnesota Vikings on KFAN, was supposed to address an impatient crowd as they headed off into the distance on the walk. But as the crowd gathered in the bleachers and gave him their full attention, he took charge of the moment — and the mike. Silent auction items, doughnuts, popcorn and corporate sponsors, including Wilbur, the large pink pig mascot from Famous Dave’s BBQ, were all set aside as Allen addressed the crowd.
“Here’s the deal, we have big options right now: some of them include mingling upstairs where the doughnuts are, and the vendors, chatting, hanging out, walking around here. Or we could start a fire and have a pig roast,” Allen offered to a round of laughter.
According to event organizers, more than $27,000 in corporate and individual donations was raised for distribution to eight area high schools’ after-school activities.
The group that raised the most donations for its activity was the Blaine cheerleaders team, which pulled in just over $3,000. The Blaine girls basketball team brought in over $1,200.
Pamela Whaley, whose daughter Bree Hare is a Blaine cheerleader, was emphatic. “This was the best fundraiser ever,” she said. “Instead of the kids having to try to sell something that somebody does not want, who’s only buying it out of guilt, (the donors) are supporting that actual team member. It was a very easy website (www.crowdrise.com/2017SpiritWalk). to use. It was fun, and I think next year will be even better,” she said.
