Going on Now – Credit Union Professionals, Vendors Attend 2018 Annual Conference

Credit union leaders, staff and vendors are in Bloomington this week to attend the 2018 Annual Conference. The conference offers 16 education sessions, the state's largest credit union exhibit hall, the 2018 Minnesota Credit Union Network Business Meeting, plus additional networking.

The three-day conference began yesterday with a Women’s Leadership Network breakfast and sessions focused on advocacy. Credit unions will be recognized for their outstanding work in the state at the Credit Union Awards Breakfast tomorrow morning. The Simon Hellerman Philanthropy, Volunteer and Professional of the year Awards will also be announced during the morning ceremony.

The conference will culminate with lunch and keynote speaker Matt Birk. Birk is a former American football center. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and later played for the Baltimore Ravens. He played college football at Harvard. Birk is a two-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowl selection, and one-time Super Bowl champion.

Minnesota Department of Commerce Seeking Credit Union Partners For Missing Money Mondays

People lose track of their money or financial property because of a change of address, death, or just forgetfulness. As part of the Commerce’s mission to protect consumers, they are committed to reuniting Minnesotans with money that has gone missing. Every year, the Unclaimed Property Program receives millions of dollars, and Commerce is responsible for safeguarding the funds or property until claimed by the rightful owners or heirs. Over the last five years, the Unclaimed Property Program has returned $182 Million.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce would like to partner with credit unions in the state to educate consumers about the Unclaimed Property Program. During the five Mondays in October, the Department of Commerce will send a representative to credit union branches to help members search for missing property and start the process to claim missing assets.

Property is considered unclaimed if it is being held by a business or organization that has not had contact with the owner for a number of years.

Common types of unclaimed property can include:

  • Dormant bank account
  • Un-cashed checks
  • Unclaimed wages
  • Safe deposit box
  • Insurance claim payments or benefits
  • Stocks or bonds

For more information, and to schedule a Missing Money Monday at your credit union, contact MnCUN Director of Communications Andrea Molnau by email or by phone at 651-288-5527.

Minnesota Department of Commerce will host the 8th Annual Minnesota Financial Capability Roundtable

The Minnesota Department of Commerce will host the 8th Annual Minnesota Financial Capability Roundtable on April 25, 2018 at 9 a.m. at the Minneapolis Central Library. The event is free, but advanced registration is required.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce will welcome Nancy Carlson, as keynote speaker for this year’s event. Nancy is an accomplished children’s author and illustrator, and her books include “Start Saving Henry,” which teaches the basics of wants versus needs when it comes to saving for a big purchase. Nancy will also share her personal story of financial hardship and lessons learned that will help to guide the morning’s conversation.

The department will also host an expo to promote networking and allow organizations to showcase their financial capability work. Credit unions interested in having a table at the expo should contact Jen Fox.
