MnCUN Provides Engagement Opportunities Through Committees

Are you looking for a professional development opportunity, or a way to get more involved in with the Network? Network Committees will be appointed after the MnCUN Annual Meeting and we are looking for interested members. There are several opportunities to get involved by serving on one of the following Board Committees:

 

The Network Awards Committee facilitates statewide and national awards programs and judges other states’ award program entries. On the national level, the committee coordinates Minnesota’s entries for CUNA’s Dora Maxwell and Louise Herring Awards and the Desjardins Award for Financial Education. On the state level, the committee recognizes individuals through the Professional and Volunteer of the Year Awards. Network Staff Liaison: Andrea Molnau

 

The Network Political Involvement Committee (PIC) provides input and recommendations on legislative efforts at the state and federal level. Policy suggestions and regulatory roadblocks are brought to the attention of PIC to collectively formulate the Network’s positions on legislation. PIC is also responsible for political fundraising, and oversees the distribution of political contributions made to credit union-friendly candidates. Network Staff Liaison: Ryan Smith

 

The Network Regulatory Review Committee provides input and recommendations on proposed rules from various federal agencies that have the potential to impact credit unions. The committee meets regularly to review proposed rules that are out for comment and determines whether a response is necessary. Network Staff Liaison: John Wendland

 

Committee members serve for one year – from their appointment through the following year’s Annual Meeting. Please express your interest by completing a short application form. Applications will be accepted through March 31, 2017. The Network Board Chair will appoint Committee members following the Annual Meeting in April.

Mncun Annual Conference Speaker Highlight: Paul Douglas

The Annual Conference will be held Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 21, at the Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington. This meeting offers ideal networking and education opportunities for exhibitors and credit union professionals alike. Attended by more than 300 credit union CEOs, senior executives, staff and volunteers annually, this conference also offers the state's largest credit union exhibit hall.

Paul Douglas will keynote the Friday luncheon during Annual Conference. Douglas is a nationally-respected meteorologist, with 34 years of broadcast television and 36 years of radio experience. He was the second TV meteorologist in the country to tap computer graphics for his daily weathercasts and has founded several innovative technologies focused on improving the weather forecasting experience for consumers.

Douglas’ speech “Weathering the Storm” will focus on how continuous disruption is changing the way we do business. Douglas will describe how a strategy of flexibility, experimentation and “self-disruption” can stormproof businesses and careers.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION GRANT deadline extended

The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation is offering $12,500 in grants to assist Minnesota credit unions in implementing financial education projects. Applications are evaluated on factors such as credit union value, community impact, collaboration and creativity. The applications deadline has been extended to Friday, March 31.

 

Examples of financial education projects/initiatives include:

  • establishing an in-school branch
  • hosting seminars on credit, debt, budgeting, etc., for members of the community
  • teaching financial literacy classes in local schools
  • partnering with a community organization to teach personal finance skills
  • coordinating retirement or estate planning workshops
  • supplying local schools with financial education curriculum

guidelines and restrictions:

  • Products/services that exclusively benefit a credit union’s membership are not eligible for funding.
  • Grants may not be used for salaries, pass-through funding, or incentive payments.
  • Minnesota credit unions may partner with non-credit union organizations for grant funding, so long as the project demonstrates a positive impact on a credit union’s community.
  • Repeated requests from previous grant recipients will be permitted, however, new project grant applicants will receive priority.

Foundation Scholarship Council 2017 Silent Auction – Donate Now

The Foundation Scholarship Council (FSC), formerly the Family Involvement Council (FIC), will be hosting their annual silent auction in conjunction with the Minnesota Credit Union Network 

Annual Conference April 20 and 21 at the Radisson Blu Mall of America. One hundred percent of the funds raised during the silent auction go to Minnesota credit union members who are looking to further their education.

 

In honor of their twentieth year as a committee, the FSC has doubled their fundraising goal for 2017. Since 1997, the FSC has reviewed 14,358 applications and awarded $166,500 in scholarships to 303 credit union members.
