Membership Drive

GREAT Membership Drive

Effective political advocacy and grassroots involvement are the backbone of the credit union movement. One of the key ways MnCUN is able to ensure that the credit union voice is heard on state and federal issues is through GREAT, the GrassRoots Education & Action Team. To help credit unions be politically effective, the Network has set the goal of having 100 percent employee participation in GREAT. It is also our goal to have at least 2 percent of each credit union's membership as active advocates involved in GREAT!
October is "GREAT Month,” and it's time to encourage credit union employees and members to join GREAT. This membership drive is intended to coincide with International Credit Union Day, which takes place on Oct. 17.
Advocacy and involvement are especially important this year as we continue the "Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign. Since the campaign launched in May, Minnesota credit unions have sent nearly 20,000 messages to our lawmakers, urging them to keep our corporate income tax exemption intact. We’re shooting for at least 36,000 messages, so let’s keep going!
Use International Credit Union Day on Oct. 17 to promote the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" campaign and sign up for the GREAT program. Visit the Network's Tax Advocacy Resources webpage for more information on the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" campaign and tools to help you engage with your members of Congress.
Legislator cards – Sign and send these to senators and representatives
These may be printed on cardstock by your credit union. Have members fill in the information on the lines provided. (Note: An address label is needed for the card intended for the representative in your district. See "Federal legislators contact info" on the Tax Advocacy Resources page.)

Sample email – Tell your Congressman: "Don't Tax My Credit Union"

"Don't Tax My CU" petition – Pledge to do your part in this campaign
As you celebrate International Credit Union Day with cookouts, contests, treats and other activities, we ask that you also take this opportunity to enroll employees and members in GREAT.

GREAT: Free, easy & effective

GREAT provides the opportunity to help preserve, protect and promote Minnesota credit unions. As not-for-profit financial institutions, credit unions don’t have the legions of lobbyist at their disposal. But what we do have is 1.5 million members and more than 4,300 employees who are engaged, passionate and have a vested interest in the well-being of their credit union. By participating in GREAT, you employees and members will join other supporters from across the state in sharing the credit union story with our elected officials.
Membership is free, and the information provided by GREAT members will only be used for the purpose of grassroots advocacy.
Here’s how the program works:
1.     GREAT members receive occasional emails asking them to contact elected officials about crucial issues.
2.     GREAT provides sample email messages and social media posts.
3.     GREAT members send targeted messages to legislators in just a few clicks!
It’s that simple!
