Network welcomes new Political Advocacy Director

The Minnesota Credit Union Network welcomed its newest staff member on Feb. 3. Ryan Smith is the Network’s Political Advocacy Director and will play a vital role in MnCUN’s grassroots efforts, political fundraising activities and lobbying initiatives.

Smith most recently worked as Governmental Affairs Director at the Pacific West Association of Realtors. In this position, he maintained strong relationships with state and federal elected officials; developed fundraising goals and strategies; and coordinated legislative communications to members, officials and the media.


NCUA offers free small credit union training video

NCUA’s Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives (OSCUI) has developed a training video to provide credit unions information on how it helps small credit unions grow and thrive. The video is part of a series of training and informational films that underscore NCUA’s commitment to the success of small, low-income and newly-chartered credit unions.

The OSCUI administers NCUA's Community Development Revolving Loan Program and aids small credit union development and member service. The 33-minute video provides a general outline of the OSCUI and gives tips on how to access its services. Specifically, it outlines four small credit union programs, including:

  • Direct assistance through one-on-one consulting;
  • Classroom-based and online training courses;
  • Financial assistance through grants and loans; and  
  • Partnerships with government, nonprofit and private organizations.

The first free video is available on the National Credit Union Administration website, and a DVD can be ordered by contacting the Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives. The premier credit union locator

Debuted in February 2011, is the national online resource to help consumers find and learn more about credit unions. Supported by leagues and managed by CUNA, this one-stop shop highlights positive news about credit unions and provides consumers insight and information about a variety of financial topics.

The goal of is to tell the credit union story to consumers and media contacts around the country. It also serves to convince and inform more potential members to join a credit union. A key element of is the credit union locator that directs consumers to a credit union that they are eligible to join.

Credit unions invited to participate in job fair

Congressman Erik Paulsen (R-3rd District) invites credit unions to participate in a job fair coordinated by his office. This event will assist Minnesotans who have lost their jobs during the recession, as well as those looking for new career opportunities.
The event will be held on Monday, March 26, from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth. It will feature businesses from throughout the state that are seeking to fill open positions. The event is free for both exhibitors and job seekers.
