In memory of his dedication, Minnesota Valley Federal Credit Union has honored Roger L. Nelson as a Credit Union Builder through the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation (MnCUF). Nelson worked in the financial industry for 37 years, until his retirement in 1997. He passed away in February of 2017.

In 1955, Nelson began his financial career and in 1960 joined State Capital Credit Union in St. Paul. In 1970, he opened the first office in Minneapolis for IBM Mid America Federal Credit Union. And in 1984, became president of Minnesota Valley Federal Credit Union based in Mankato. During his credit union career, he served on the Board of Directors of Minnesota League, Minnesota Corporate Credit Union and as a Credit Union National Association Director.

“Roger truly lived the credit union mission in that helping people meaningfully better their financial situation was always the most important priority. He believed whole heartedly that credit union cooperatives were the best choice, “ said Minnesota Valley Federal Credit Union CEO Nick Meyer. “Roger was always willing to help in any way he could to share that message.”

Nelson joins 44 other individuals who have been honored since 2008 with the MnCUF Credit Union Builder Award. The names of the recipients and the contributing credit unions are permanently displayed in the Minnesota Credit Union Network lobby as a tribute to their accomplishments. The honorees’ family receives a plaque from the MnCUF, and donors are also listed online and in the MnCUF annual report.
