Last week, credit union professionals from across Minnesota gathered to celebrate the second year of the Minnesota Credit Union Women’s Leadership Network. The Minnesota Credit Union Women’s Leadership Network is a local chapter of the World Council of Credit Unions’ Global Women’s Leadership Network. The purpose is to convene Minnesota’s women credit union professionals, discuss credit union issues, exchange ideas, network with neighboring credit union leaders, and share lessons learned with Global Women’s Leadership Network members worldwide.

2018 Accomplishments include:

  • 5 events held
  • 176 credit union attendees
  • 35 credit unions participated
  • 635 hours of professional development provided
  • $2,180 raised for the Global Women’s Leadership Network
  • $1,111 raised for water filers
  •  4 Minnesota attendees at Executive Readiness Summit

The Anniversary Celebration was held at Urban Growler, the first woman owned microbrewery in Minnesota. Jill Pavlak, the co-head honcho of the brewery shared that she had a goal that was simple – ‘Bring people together’ – and she achieved it. Attendees also heard from a panel of CEO’s who shared their experiences and advice for leadership. Thank you to: Deb Almirall, Minnesota Power Employees Credit Union; Aaron DeJong, Red Wing Credit Union; Kathy Harrington, Heartland Credit Union; Mary Matheson, Wakota Credit Union; Bill Raker, Firefly Credit Union; and Tom Smith, Topline Credit Union. The beauty of a night like that is that those nuggets that were shared turn into lasting wisdom for attendees:

  • Help...ask for and give
  • You are never 100% prepared, but learn
  • Looking out for employees, above and below, members, community
  • Be interested, instead of interesting
  • Get involved...other boards, rotary, chamber, non-profit
  • Use staff ideas...let them come up with them
  • Appreciate the credit union philosophy
  • Fear is an opportunity
  • Take calculating risks
  • Honest and open communication
  • Have passion
  • Influence...and let others influence you
  • Learn from peers, colleagues
  • Ask questions
  • Don’t be afraid of making mistakes
