Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union - BRAINERD, Minn. (September 18, 2017) - Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union Board Chair Lori Trygg shared leadership lessons and wisdom from the board room Sept. 8 as a featured panelist at the Women's Leadership Network fall event in Brainerd.

The annual event is hosted by the Minnesota Credit Union Network.

Trygg was joined by other female board chairs from Hiway Federal Credit Union, Firefly Credit Union and Mayo Employees Federal Credit Union. The panelists shared perspectives and insights with more than 50 women leaders from within the credit union industry, ranging from tellers to CEOs and all in between.

Trygg urged participants to emphasize networking, continued education and building relationships as they begin or continue in their careers.

“Your choice in career is critical as well," she said, noting that working within the credit-union industry offers intangible benefits. "You have made a choice to work for mission-driven organizations. If you believe in what you do and feel it’s important work, that makes a big difference. It will help propel you toward future growth and opportunity,"  she said.

She also urged participants to be curious, ask questions and learn all they can.

The panelists shared examples of how they've grown leadership skills throughout their careers, both in traditional and non-traditional ways. That included involvement on local city planning commissions; professional associations; church groups; and university alumni programs.

Trygg and the panelists encouraged participants to take advantage of their employers' tuition-reimbursement programs to continue life-long learning, and follow their passions by participating in (or establishing) interest groups, like a women's golf league or religious-studies group.

Trygg spoke to the myth of work-life balance that most working parents try to achieve or maintain.

"It's important to understand the different phases of your life and what your limitations are within them," she said. "You need to depend on other people and arrive at the understanding that you're not going to be able to do everything. It's about priorities."

Trygg joined the Affinity Plus Board of Directors in 2010, and currently is in her second term as chair. A 12-year member of the credit union, she also is the senior vice president and chief legal officer for Constellation, a physician-owned medical professional liability insurance and health information technology company.

Trygg has more than 25 years of experience in insurance and financial services. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School.
