Minnesota’s Credit Unions Elect Board of Directors at Annual Conference

Last week, over 450 credit union professionals, volunteers, and vendors from all areas of Minnesota met for the 2018 MnCUN Annual Conference. Held at the Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington, the conference featured education sessions, the state’s largest credit union exhibit hall, Minnesota Credit Union Foundation committee fundraisers, and networking events.

Along with networking and education opportunities, conference attendees participated in the annual Business Meeting, which featured an overview of credit union accomplishments over the past year, as well as committee reports and the Board election.

This year two incumbents were re-elected, and one new member elected, to three-year terms on the MnCUN Board of Directors:

  • Mary Hansen – Mayo Employees FCU – At Large Category
  • Tom Smith – TopLine FCU - At Large Category
  • Julia Havens – Riverview CU – Under 10,000 Members Category

Following the Business Meeting, Board table officers were elected. Dan Stolz of SPIRE will serve as Chair, Karen Fleming of HBI Employees will serve as Vice Chair, and Mary Hansen of Mayo Employees will serve as Secretary/Treasurer.

Chuck Albrecht of Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union concluded his time on the Board of Directors and was presented a framed painting of Minnesota’s state flower, the lady slipper, as a token of appreciation for his twelve years of service to the Network.

Minnesota Selected as a Pilot for CUNA’s Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union Awareness Campaign

Douglas Kiker, CUNA Chief Strategic Communications Officer, and Mark Cummins, MnCUN President and CEO announced that Minnesota has been selected as a pilot for CUNA’s Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union Awareness Campaign at the Minnesota Credit Union Network Annual Convention last week.

“It has always been our promise to Minnesota credit unions that our Awareness effort would work in conjunction with CUNA’s,” said Cummins. “We have kept that promise through sharing research results, utilizing those results in our messaging, and working closely with CUNA as their creative concept for a national campaign became available.” Frank Weidner, CEO of Wings Financial Credit Union, serves on CUNA’s Awareness Advisory Group.

The It’s Your Choice, Choose Minnesota Credit Unions campaign, launched in late April last year, resulted in over 20 million digital impressions and over 23,000 visits to the microsite. After just 7 months, 29% of Millennials recalled seeing one of the Awareness Campaign ads. The second year of the reputation and knowledge building campaign, MnCUN will continue to build momentum by maintaining the existing efforts that have been successful, while amplifying our voice and specific points of differentiation by shifting the creative assets to align with the CUNA initiative.

Kiker shared several elements of the national awareness effort during a conference break out session - including the brand platform, messaging guide, and creative concept for the Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union campaign. Details for the campaign are outlined on the site:, password openyoureyes. Credit unions are encouraged to download the messaging guide and incorporate the suggestions into their own marketing efforts. “Minnesota is a leader in awareness and is helping set the pace nationally,” Kiker commented.

Work is underway to prepare the creative assets and customize them for Minnesota. The media buys and event marketing are planned to launch this summer. With questions, please contact Andrea Molnau, Vice President Communications & Engagement.

Co-Op Shared Branching Offers Members More than 5,600 locations from coast to coast

Access to convenient branches is a high priority for consumers in all demographics, but branch economics are changing. It’s now more challenging than ever to provide local and nationwide branch access while still generating revenue and driving growth.

  • CO-OP Shared Branch is the second largest branch network in the country, with more than 5,600 credit union branches and hundreds of self-service Shared Branch express terminals in all 50 states.
  • The CO-OP Shared Branch network allows members of one credit union to do a range of transactions at another credit union. Through the CO-OP Shared Branch network, participating credit unions can serve members in diverse geographical locations, even when they move or travel.
  • CO-OP Shared Branch express terminals provide after-hours member access, reduce teller traffic, and can help you leverage your existing investment in ATMs.

The Minnesota Credit Union Network offers Shared Branching through the Minnesota Credit Union Service Corporation. For more information, contact MnCUN Vice President – Network Service Corporation John Ferstl by email or at 651-288-5505.
