News from the MnCUN Board of Directors

The Network’s Board of Directors represent the interests of credit unions all of sizes and from all parts of the state. The Board works together with MnCUN’s President & CEO to ensure that all member credit unions receive high-quality service and that the interests of Minnesota credit unions are promoted both at the state and national level. Last week, the Minnesota Credit Union Network Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting at the MnCUN office in St. Paul.

The following is an overview of issues addressed by the board:

  • MnCUN Performance Survey results: Of the respondents, 92 percent said that MnCUN has improved or maintained its service to credit unions. Of MnCUN’s core competency areas, respondents ranked Regulatory/Compliance Support and Legislative Advocacy as the top two most important services; followed by Communications, Training/ Education, Operational Support/Member Service and Products & Services.

  • MnIPC/OnApproach Partnership: Earlier this year, The Minnesota Item Processing Corporation (MnIPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Minnesota Credit Union Network announced a new partnership with OnApproach, a leading provider of Big Data and Analytics solutions for credit unions. Through the partnership, MnIPC offers OnApproach solutions to clients in both hosted and service-bureau environments.

  • 2016 GrassRoots Education & Action Team campaign: The GrassRoots Education & Action Team (GREAT) is coordinated by the Minnesota Credit Union Network and powered by Minnesota credit union employees, volunteers, and members. GREAT provides credit union supporters a way to help preserve, protect and promote Minnesota credit unions. Gaining GREAT members to create a strong, unified network of credit union advocates is a major focus of MnCUN in 2016.

Represent Minnesota: FHLB Des Moines Advisory Council Nominations Open

Through Friday, Aug. 19, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) is accepting nominations for an Affordable Housing Advisory Council (Advisory Council) member to represent the state of Minnesota. The term of services for the new Advisory Council member is three years, beginning Jan. 1, 2017 and ending Dec. 31, 2019.


  • Eligible Advisory Council nominees are those who reside in Minnesota and represent community and nonprofit organizations actively involved in providing or promoting low- and moderate-income housing and community lending.
  • Appointed Advisory Council members remain eligible to use FHLB Des Moines Community Investment products including the Competitive Affordable Housing Program (AHP) and down payment assistance programs (Home$tart, Home$tart Plus and the Native American Homeownership Initiative).
  • Employees and directors of FHLB Des Moines member financial institutions are not eligible to serve on the Advisory Council.

Role and Expectations

  • The Advisory Council meets at least quarterly with the FHLB Des Moines Board of Directors to provide advice on ways the Bank may carry out its housing finance and community investment mission, which includes, among other things, recommendations for policies governing the Bank's AHP and down payment assistance products.
  • FHLB Des Moines covers Advisory Council member travel expenses associated with attendance at these meetings.
  • Advisory Council members are expected to attend substantially all Advisory Council meetings held during their term.

OnApproach Announces the Winner of the 2016 Analytics and Financial Innovation Conference (AXFI)

Last week, OnApproach, a leading provider of Big Data and Analytics for credit unions, announced the winner of the 2016 Analytics and Financial Innovation Conference (AXFI) Best Practices Competition.

The Best Practices Competition introduces a forum that allows credit unions to share these ideas with each other so that they too can benefit from this knowledge. At the 2016 Analytics and Financial Innovation Conference, there were three finalists selected to showcase their hottest reporting, dashboarding, and/or analytics work product in the Best Practices Competition. The goal of the competition is to help the credit union industry become more analytically driven by collaborating and sharing best practices.

The three finalists that presented their work at the 2016 Analytics and Financial Innovation Conference were: Empower Federal Credit Union, Oregon Community Credit Union, and Sunshine Coast Credit Union.

Of the three finalists that presented, Empower Federal Credit Union's Sales and Service Program was selected by the panel of judges, comprised of industry experts, as the winner of the competition. Todd Wolfe, Director of Application Development and Business Intelligence at Empower Federal Credit Union presented their Sales and Service Program at the 2016 AXFI Analytics Competition. This program provides members with a data-driven personalized experience when interacting with members via various channels. Integrated into the CORE banking system, it provides the front line staff the most important and relevant data to converse with the member they are interacting with.

Todd Wolfe, Director of Application Development and Business Intelligence at Empower stated, "The Sales and Service Program has made a significant improvement to our front line. It has proven incredibly valuable to be able to interact with members on a more personal level. We have always desired this level of personalization, and the integration of our data sources has finally made it both possible and simple."
