Attention Young Professional: Let the Cooperative Trust be your new go-to resource.

“We can’t predict the future, but we can build it together.” One of many inspirational and motivating quotes you will find on the Co-Op Trust’s website.  The Co-Op Trust was founded in 2010 with the goal of uniting young people that work in credit unions and cooperatives to secure a strong future for the movement.

If you have heard about young professionals “crashing” conferences, this is owed to the Trust. It began with the GAC and has now spread to various groups such as the CUNA Council Conferences and Filene’s own Big. Bright. Minds. convention.

The Minnesota Credit Union Network started a “Crash the Fall Conference” in response to the growing young professional demographic in the credit union industry. This initiative gives young professionals the opportunity to network and learn from local and national industry leaders; as well as exposure and education for their individual careers. Read the Co-Op Trust’s blog to gain insight from other YPs regarding their experiences “crashing” various events.

Being a member of the Co-Op Trust offers more than “crashing” opportunities.

  • Connect and participate via forums with topics ranging from career advancement and leadership best practices to financial literacy efforts and cooperative collaboration.
  •  For those starting their careers or any YP looking for guidance, the Trust offers a mentorship program to assist in making the needed connections.
  •  Be part of innovation with the 3NTRUST, which ties together members of the Trust with past, present, and future i3 members.

The FIC Bids Farewell to Former Members

The MN Family Involvement Council (FIC) has presented two committee members with service recognition plaques.

Greg Hird, the FIC’s Treasurer, joined the team in 2009, quickly becoming instrumental in the operation of the council.  He was with the FIC for eight Annual Meetings and Silent Auctions, which means he helped raise $77,628 for the FIC Scholarship Program!  Greg was helpful in every aspect of council operations, including handling the financials, fundraising efforts and overall serving as an FIC ambassador.

Courtney Watkins joined the FIC in 2014, and was involved with scholarship judging and the FIC’s annual silent auction fundraiser. She was also instrumental in planning sessions and other organizational activities of the operation.  She helped raise over $30,000 for FIC Scholarships in her two plus years.

“Both Greg and Courtney live the credit union philosophy of people-helping-people,” said FIC Chair Bridget Petersen “They were valued members of our team and will be deeply missed by all of us.”

The Minnesota Family Involvement Council (FIC), a committee of the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, strives to build credit union brand awareness and strengthen member relationships through our scholarship program.

NYIB Annual Conference and 2016 Annual Report

The National Youth Involvement Board (NYIB) hosted its annual conference last week in San Antonio, TX, where over 100 credit union financial education professionals from across the country gathered to share ideas and best practices.

Among those, financial education professionals from Minnesota were also represented from Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, Hiway Federal Credit Union, Royal Credit Union, Wings Financial Credit Union, and the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation.

At the conference, the NYIB 2016 Annual Report was also released, celebrating that over 500,000 students were reached through credit union classroom presentations from 2015-2016.

Trysh Olson from Wings Financial Credit Union received an award for having the second highest number of presentations given during the 2015-2016 year (by asset size), having presented 366 presentations during the reporting period.

Jennifer McHugh also presented at a “best practices” session, where she reported on Royal Credit Union’s experience opening their Eden Prairie High School branch, “the Perch”, in 2015. Royal Credit Union was the recipient of a MN Credit Union Foundation financial education grant that assisted in supporting the branch opening.

For more information on attending the 2017 NYIB Conference, how to report financial education presentations in the classroom, or for access to financial education resources, see the NYIB website.
