Minnesota Credit Union Marketing Awards Program Accepting Applications

Last year, the Minnesota Credit Union Network introduced a statewide credit union marketing awards program. Open to all MnCUN member credit unions, the awards will recognize outstanding programs in the areas of branding, community impact and outreach, digital advertising, printed material, video, and complete campaigns.


Last year, the marketing awards received 34 applications. Following evaluation by three independent judges, 13 credit unions were honored with awards. Following feedback from 2017 award applicants, the 2018 program includes additional entry categories and a more comprehensive breakout of asset categories.


“Minnesota credit unions are doing remarkable things to grow brand awareness and market to members and nonmembers alike,” said MnCUN Director of Communications Laura Whittet. “We at the state trade association want to recognize their efforts and highlight the best of the best.”


Winners will be announced at an awards banquet to be held the first week of December. Winning submissions will be included in a presentation during the banquet and credit unions will be invited to share their work during an interactive panel discussion on credit union marketing best practices during the Minnesota Credit Union Network Annual Meeting being held April 25 through 26 at the Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington.

Branch Operations P2P Scheduled for Oct. 23 

Credit union professionals are invited to join their peers at the Minnesota Credit Union Network’s fall Branch Operations Peer-to-Peer (P2P) session. P2P events are discipline-specific, providing an opportunity to learn from industry experts and other credit union staff in your field. The Branch Operations P2P will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Wings Financial Credit Union in Apple Valley.


During the session, McCoy Legal Services Estate Planning Attorney Ray McCoy will discuss serving members’ estate planning needs, with a focus on establishing and managing estate and trust accounts. Additional time will be provided for questions and group discussion.

Minnesota Credit Union Foundation Announces Financial Education Grant Awards

The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation (MnCUF) recently awarded six financial education grants to assist credit unions in Minnesota with implementing financial education projects.


The following are the fall 2018 Financial Education Grant recipients and projects:


City and County Credit Union –  City & County Credit Union’s Money on the Bookshelf is a family-orientated financial literacy program that encourages children ages 4 to 14 to learn about financial literacy by reading money themed books and having interactive dialogue with their parents. City & County will launch Money on the Bookshelf in 3 additional branch locations.


Co-Op Credit Union Montevideo – Through the Financial Counseling program at Co-op Credit Union, one person from each of the credit unions’ four branches will become certified in Financial Counseling. These individuals will be able to assist members with becoming more financially sound, helping members when they are going through troubled times, and helping members who are in a delinquent status on their loans.


North Star Credit Union – North Star Credit Union will create curriculum books for their Bunch of Students Saving (B.O.S.S.) program. The B.O.S.S. program involves creating student focus groups that meet every week to talk about different financial topics and providing resources for students to establish a successful financial future. 


Royal Credit Union – In partnership with YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, Royal Credit Union will offer FUSE (Future U.S. Entrepreneurs), a competitive learning experience for middle school students. Participating students draw from weekly business and entrepreneurship lessons and receive help and mentorship, resulting in a complete business proposal.


St. Cloud Federal Credit Union – In partnership with St. Cloud Federal Credit Union, Sartell High School students research and recommend lending through KIVA, a worldwide organization that helps people in poverty. The students must present their research findings and present a potential recipient to a panel from our credit union who determines which projects to fund. St. Cloud Federal Credit Union will extend the KIVA lending program to Apollo High School.


United Educators Credit Union - Through Mad City Money, United Educators Credit Union will offer a hands-on, real-world budgeting simulation for students. United Educators will work specifically with students at Compass Programs in Anoka and River Trail Learning Center in Coon Rapids to assist students in alternative learning centers.

Credit Unions for Kids Bowl-O-Rama Registration, Sponsorship Opportunities Available

Join the Minnesota Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids) committee for the annual Bowl-O-Rama on Wednesday, October 24 in Wyoming, Minnesota. This event provides credit union professionals and volunteers the chance to raise money for a great cause and have fun doing it.


All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare and its clinics around the state, which help kids with disabilities and chronic conditions. Gillette is Minnesota’s Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) designated hospital.
