Network Board Supports Interdependent CUNA/League System

At its recent meeting, the Minnesota Credit Union Network Board voted to endorse the interdependent system of state leagues and CUNA, supporting dual membership in both organizations. This endorsement reinforces our existing structure in accordance with both Network and CUNA bylaws.

The Board believes that a unified front is necessary for powerful state and national advocacy, and maximizes resources for Minnesota Credit Unions. The sum of both organizations provides amplified value on a number of levels, including stronger regulatory influence, more effective legislative advocacy, and wider marketplace awareness. Therefore, the Board supports the model in which credit unions are members of both the Network and CUNA.

Please feel free to reach out to Mark Cummins with questions or feedback on the Board’s position.

Three Minn. credit unions receive national recognition for community involvement, financial education efforts

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) recently announced that three Minnesota credit unions received national recognition in 2015 through the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Awards and Desjardins Financial Education Awards programs. These awards recognize credit union excellence in community service and financial literacy initiatives.

Award entries from Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union (St. Paul), Topline Federal Credit Union (Maple Grove) and Wings Financial Credit Union (Apple Valley) received national awards after taking first place honors at the state level and advancing to the national competition in August.

“I am pleased to see Minnesota credit unions acknowledged for the work they are doing to support their communities,” said Minnesota Credit Union Network President & CEO Mark Cummins. “All of these Minnesota winners are great examples of the credit union mission of people helping people.”

A summary of the award-winning entries follows:

Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award was created in 1987 and recognizes credit unions for the activities they coordinate that benefit the community or a specific charity. This award promotes social responsibility among credit unions by formally recognizing their achievements outside the credit union.

Wings Financial Credit Union (honorable mention, more than $1 billion in assets category) Wings Financial Credit Union employees volunteered at the Kids In Need Foundation (KINF) warehouse in Minneapolis. Employees sorted school supplies and packed 1,269 backpacks for low-income children. KINF’s mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need

Desjardins Financial Education Award

The Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Awards formally recognize the leadership of individual credit unions in their efforts to educate youths and adults in financial literacy.

Topline Federal Credit Union (first place, youth education, more $150 - 500 million in assets category) TopLine Federal Credit Union is committed to Get Smart With Your Money; an ongoing financial education initiative in our Minneapolis/St. Paul communities encouraging kids and their parents to talk about spending, saving and sharing money wisely. The series of financial literacy workshops consists of three age-specific sessions with content being based on age.

Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action

Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action Award focuses on the internal programs and services of a credit union. Credit unions who received the award have demonstrated the practical application of the credit union philosophy within the actual operations of the credit union.

Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union (Second Place, More than $1 billion in assets category) The Estate Planning Program implemented by Affinity Plus for its members has helped numerous individuals and families of all ages understand estate planning basics and how to best protect their wishes after they are gone. Members have access to consultations with an estate planning advisor, educational seminars on varying estate planning, and question-and-answer sessions with an estate planning advisor. As of July 2015, over 1200 Affinity Plus members have benefitted from the Estate Planning Program.

Award-winning entries will be on display at CUNA’s 2016 Governmental Affairs Conference, February 21 through 25, in Washington, D.C., and award winners will also be honored at the the2016 MnCUN Annual Meeting.
