What is Shared Branching? Through this program, credit unions across the country have joined together to create shared service center locations. The shared branching network enables credit unions to provide their members with thousands of convenient locations to perform transactions, just as if they were at their home credit union. By sharing facilities, credit unions extend their reach to offer greater convenience to all members in Minnesota and across the nation. The Network Service Corporation (NSC) manages Minnesota's shared service centers under contract with the Minnesota Credit Union Services Corporation (MnCUSC), a CUSO formed and owned by the NSC and credit unions.

What is Shared Branching?

A service center is a shared facility where members of credit unions who have joined the shared branching network can conduct basic financial transactions. The service center program was designed to offer the convenience of providing strategic multiple locations and extended hours of operation in a professional credit union environment. Service centers are located nationwide to serve all members of participating credit unions. By sharing their facilities, credit unions provide their members with greater access to accounts and services.

Members can enter any shared service center and conduct a range of transaction services, such as:

  • Cash checks
  • Make deposits and withdrawals
  • Make loan payments
  • Make transfers between accounts

Many service centers offer money orders and travelers checks, and allow members to obtain cash advances and balance inquiries.

How does Shared Branching work?

To take advantage of this service, members simply need to provide: 

  • Their home credit union’s name
  • Their account number
  • Valid government-issued photo ID

Service center tellers then access the member’s account and perform the requested transaction in real time. Credit unions receive daily transaction settlement reports and monthly transaction and billing reports.

Participation Options

Credit unions can participate in shared branching in different ways:

  1. Issuer: Your members can be served at service centers around the nation.
  2. Acquirer: Your credit union can become a service center and serve members of other credit unions.
  3. Both 

Types of Service Centers

  • Stand-Alone Service Center: A free-standing facility owned and operated by a company.
  • Credit Union Service Center (outlet): A credit union’s existing branch can be set up to transact business for shared branching members.
  • Licensed Service Center: A free-standing facility owned and operated by one or more credit unions.
