As one of the final steps in the new credit union charter application process, the Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP) is seeking volunteers for credit union Board of Directors, Supervisory and Credit Committees. ABEP is a nonprofit organization created to establish a Black-led credit union to address systemic financial challenges impacting Minneapolis residents, particularly people of color.
It has been advised by state and federal regulators that credit union executive staff should not be on a board or committee of another credit union; however, staff and mid-level management would be acceptable based on the approval of the employing credit union. “This would be an excellent professional development opportunity for those with financial, credit or compliance and audit experience,” said Mark Cummins, President & CEO of the Minnesota Credit Union Network. “Volunteering for the new credit union is a chance to build something from the ground up, and make a real difference in the lives of North Minneapolis community members.” To learn more, visit https://www.learnaboutvillage.org/careers; or reach out directly to Debra Hurston, Executive Director of ABEP. Federal Agencies Issue Joint Statement on Risk-Based Approach to Assessing Individual Member Risk: The NCUA joined the Federal Reserve, FDIC, FinCEN and the Comptroller of the Currency in issuing a joint statement to remind credit unions of the risk based approach they should be taking to assess member relationships and conduct customer due diligence (CDD). This past spring, the Minnesota Credit Union Network provided thirteen virtual Peer-to-Peer (P2P) sessions, welcoming over 200 attendees from 46 different credit unions. Attendees participated in lively discussions with peers, learned from expert presenters, and grew connections with the credit union community.
Our P2Ps will continue virtually in the fall as we continue to reach and provide programming for credit union staff and volunteers throughout Minnesota. These sessions will maintain a focus on creating forums that foster knowledge sharing, networking and growth of credit unions. New for 2023 - the Minnesota Credit Union Network will be offering a credit union P2P subscription option, giving access to all P2P sessions for any staff at a credit union throughout the year. Any affiliated credit union may subscribe to the P2P program through a one-time, annual payment. The P2P subscription will come with a discount code unique to your credit union for registration at any of the P2P sessions throughout the year. Cost structure*:
