The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) has committed to support credit union employees and volunteers impacted by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona with CUAid. CU Aid provides emergency funds to credit union employees and volunteers in the event of a natural disaster. The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation recently made a donation to CU Aid in support of this effort.
“CUAid was made for moments like this. We manage the fund in such a way as to position us to provide support, even when multiple disasters happen in quick succession. But we are seeing environmental disasters wreak more havoc, more often. In light of that, and following both Hurricanes Fiona and Ian, the Foundation is calling on our credit union and system partners to continue to donate to CUAid,” said André Parraway, the NCUF’s chief financial and operations officer. Individuals or organizations can contribute to CUAid at any time. The restricted nature of the fund ensures every penny donated goes directly to supporting credit unions and their people recover from catastrophic events. You can donate to CUAid here.
Consumers and merchants alike benefit from the current interchange system but some lawmakers in Washington, DC are looking to make changes that could impact credit card security for consumers, make it harder for people to access credit, and increase costs to small businesses. Tell your lawmakers to keep the current interchange system that protects cards keeps the economy flowing.
There are also opportunities to advance the credit union movement with the introduction of the The Expanding Financial Access for Underserved Communities Act and the Credit Union Board Modernization Act. These bills would modernize the Federal Credit Union Act to help credit unions operate more efficiently to meet their members' needs. Now is the time to remind members and credit union employees why being engaged in advocacy is essential to protecting our industry. We’re challenging all our member credit unions to increase the number of advocates during the GREAT Month. To help, please use the resources in the GREAT toolkit to help engage new staff and members in the effort. 65 credit unions and partners and counting from across the state will dedicate one day to give back to their communities. 3,000 volunteers will participate in large group volunteer projects, park clean-ups, food drives, contributions to nonprofits, surprising family members and friends in need, and committing random acts of kindness for others.
Follow along with the hashtag #CUForwardDay on social media! To celebrate the spirit of the day, participants in volunteer and giveback activities are welcome to join the CU Forward Day After Party, hosted by United Financials Making a Difference. This casual event is meant to foster community connections and will include an optional food drive in support of Keystone Community Services. Anyone involved in spreading kindness as a part of CU Forward Day is invited – register to let the after-party committee know you’re coming! Please visit the CU Forward webpage for updates, to gain access to the CU Forward Day toolkit, and begin planning activities for this year’s kindness day. With questions, please reach out to Director of Engagement, Ben Hering, via email. The Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP) is pleased to provide the following update on the status of the new credit union charter application process. ABEP is a nonprofit organization created to establish a Black-led credit union to address systemic financial challenges impacting Minneapolis residents, particularly people of color. Project updates include:
To increase the accessibility and functionality of the Credit Union Diversity Self-Assessment, the NCUA has introduced several process improvements. These enhancements include additional details for submitting surveys, improved navigation, prepopulation of certain fields, and compliance with the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act. The modernization also upgrades security and ensures data integrity and confidentiality.
During the first week of October, credit unions will receive an email with a personalized link to the 2022 Diversity Self-Assessment. The official submission period to be included in the 2022 report will end January 31, 2023. Since the introduction of the Self-Assessment in 2016, more than 400 credit unions have used the tool to evaluate their diversity-and-inclusion efforts. While the steady increase in submissions shows promise, this participation level represents only 8.6 percent of all credit unions as of December 31, 2021. The NCUA strongly encourages all credit unions to submit an assessment each year. The NCUA reports submissions anonymously in the aggregate. The agency does not consider diversity and inclusion data when assigning CAMELS ratings, nor does it share credit union information with the agency’s regulatory function. For more information about the Credit Union Diversity Self-Assessment, visit the NCUA’s Credit Union Diversity webpage. A discussion of the Credit Union Diversity Self-Assessment will take place at the NCUA DEI and ACCESS Summit, Nov. 2 – 4, 2022. |
