MnCUN Issues GREAT Alert on GENIUS Act, Big Box Bailout

5/28/2025

Earlier today, the Minnesota Credit Union Network sent a GREAT alert urging advocates to contact Senators Klobuchar and Smith ahead of consideration of the GENIUS Act.

When the Senate returns to Washington next week, it will begin consideration of the GENIUS Act, which would establish a federal regulatory framework for issuing stablecoins. While this is significant in itself, the GENIUS Act is also the first Senate Banking Committee bill to reach the floor in eight years, making it a prime vehicle for a wide range of financial services amendments.

One such amendment that could be especially damaging to Minnesota credit unions is Sen. Marshall’s Credit Card Competition Act—often referred to as the Big Box Bailout. This proposal would impose harmful, government-mandated routing restrictions, effectively acting as back-door price controls on interchange fees.

We believe it is vital that Minnesota credit unions speak up now. Your Senators need to hear directly from you about how these proposed changes would hurt your operations, and more importantly, your members, who are among the 142 million Americans credit unions serve nationwide.

Cheers to 100 Years: High Yield Pale Ale Launches with Celebration of Collaboration

5/28/2025

Last week, credit union leaders, community partners, and local supporters gathered at Broken Clock Cooperative Brewing in Minneapolis to raise a glass to a century of people helping people—and to celebrate the launch of High Yield Pale Ale, a limited-edition craft beer created in partnership between the Minnesota Credit Union Network and Broken Clock. A portion of proceeds from each sale supports the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation’s financial literacy initiatives across the state.

Attendees had the opportunity to sample the beer, meet the team behind the project, and learn how to get involved by:
  • Serving High Yield Pale Ale at member or community events
  • Sharing the story with members who want to support the cause
  • Helping bring the beer to local shelves and taps through credit union small business partnerships

Mid Minnesota FCU Shares High Yield Pale Ale with Members and Community
“At Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union’s annual meeting on May 21, we took the opportunity to not only report on the achievements of our credit union and a focus on the future. We also celebrated the 100 years milestone of credit unions in Minnesota, which included our Board Chair Greg Lange sharing highlights from the spring MN CUN conference, playing the 100th Anniversary History video, and giving each member a can of the High Yield Pale Ale. Bob Gerads, our CEO, had the idea of incorporating the beer when it was announced as being available.
The online request form was completed, but we also reached out to MnCUN directly since the timeline was tight and there weren’t any current distributers in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Jeremy from Broken Clock Brewing Co-Op presented two options: personally driving up our order OR helping get a local distributer. In a matter of days both were accomplished!

Jeremy personally delivered 10 cases to our Annual Meeting location and made deliveries to a local distribution partner. So, when delighted members received their can and asked where they could get more, we were able to tell them Westside Liquors! This celebration was a win for our members, a local business, and the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation! Cheers!”

-Submitted by Miranda Anderson, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Marketing

Want to bring High Yield Pale Ale to Your Community?
High Yield Pale Ale will be available throughout 2025 at credit union events, community festivals, and select locations around Minnesota - including Broken Clock's Taproom. Connect with Broken Clock Cooperative Brewing directly to learn more about how to bring it to your community.

Together, we’re raising a glass—and awareness—for 100 years of the credit union difference.

Regulatory & Compliance Updates

CFPB Withdraws Three Proposed Rules; Search for a Permanent Director Continues: On May 15, 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) published notice in the Federal Register that it is withdrawing three proposals introduced under the previous administration.

CFPB Rescinds 2021 Mortgage Servicing Regulations: The CFPB has issued an interim final rule formally rescinding its 2021 mortgage servicing regulations tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, a move that will ease compliance obligations for credit unions and other mortgage servicers.
