​​MnCUN Committees are seeking interested members for appointment. The MnCUN Board Chair will appoint Committee members to serve for one year – from their appointment through the following year’s Annual Business Meeting, taking place during the ACCELERATE conference in April.

Regulatory & Compliance Updates: March 20, 2024

CFPB Director Updates Status of Financial Data Exchange (Open Banking - 1033 Rule): On March 14, Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) director Rohit Chopra made remarks at the Financial Exchange Global Summit addressing the status the proposed rule to shift to open banking. 

FTC Amends Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR): On March 7, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced substantial revisions to its telemarketing sales final rule extending telemarketing fraud protections to businesses and updating the rule’s recordkeeping requirements in light of developments in technology and the marketplace.

FCC Final Rule On Robocalls and Robotexts: The Federal Communications Commission published its final rule to ‘clarify and strengthen’ a consumer’s right to revoke consent to receive robocalls and robotexts under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). 

CFPB Late Fee Final Rule Clarified: The final rule was published March 15 in the federal register and will currently be effective May 14 limiting the safe harbor amount for card late fees for large issuers (over 1M accounts) to $8 regardless of the number of late payments which will not be adjusted annually.

Congress Facing Critical Vote to Prevent a Partial Government Shutdown; MnCUN Monitoring Debt and "Junk Fees" Proposals in the Minnesota Legislature

​Congress is focused on wrapping up the remaining spending bills before Friday’s deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown. There seem to be some stumbling blocks for them to get over, but they are anticipated to vote in the House and Senate this week to pass those remaining bills.

Join the Upcoming Peer-to-Peer Session on Regulatory & Compliance Hot Topics

The second Spring Peer-to-Peer will take place on Wednesday, April 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and will focus on Regulatory and Compliance Hot Topics. The virtual session will include a speaker and then break into department areas for smaller group peer discussion on how the topics pertains to various teams. 

We hope this new format continues to provide credit union professionals the opportunity to participate in cooperative meetings to network and exchange ideas; and provides your teams the opportunity to learn about pertinent topics that prompts additional conversations at your credit union. Stay tuned for further announcements and updates!

Honor A Colleague with a CU Builder Award

The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation's Credit Union Builder Award honors an individual’s dedication to the success, growth, and vitality of the not-for-profit financial movement in Minnesota. Dedications are typically made at a special time of significance to acknowledge their contributions to credit unions. 

​​In total, 94 individuals have been designated as Credit Union Builders. The name of the recipients are permanently displayed in lobby of the Minnesota Credit Union Network, as a tribute to those who have dedicated time and energy to building the credit union movement.

The honorees (or their families, in the case of a memoriam contribution) receive acknowledgement from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, and donors are also listed online and, in the Foundation’s annual report. A minimum $1,500 contribution is required to designate a Credit Union Builder Award.

The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation Scholarship Council (FSC) is requesting your support for our annual Silent Auction fundraiser to benefit our scholarship program! 

​​Our annual Silent Auction will be held April 18 & 19, 2024 at the Mystic Lake Center in Prior Lake. As a signature event of the Minnesota Credit Union Network’s ACCELERATE conference, hundreds of credit union employees and their affiliates will bid on auction items. All money generated from this fundraiser goes directly to students through scholarships. Our goal is to raise $15,000! Visit the FSC Page for more details.

​The Minnesota Credit Union Network works to ensure a thriving credit union system in Minnesota through powerful advocacy, expertise, resources, opportunity, and influence on behalf of our member credit unions and their more than 2 million members.

​Please provide to the MnCUN staff and Board of Directors your response to our 2023 annual performance by Friday, March 29. This survey will take 5-10 minutes of your time and we welcome all comments. 

Respondents can enter for a chance to win a free registration for ACCELERATE 24. To ensure the feedback is anonymous, respondents will be redirected following the survey to a separate page to enter their contact information for the drawing. The winner will be notified by April 3.

MnCUN Board of Directors Election Update

Three seats on the Minnesota Credit Union Network Board of Directors are up for election in 2024: two in the at-large category (3-year term), and one in the 10,000 or fewer credit union members category (3-year terms). There are two candidates declared for the two at-large seats: Jay Gostonczik, SouthPoint Financial CU, and Dave Larson, Affinity Plus FCU. 

Four candidates have declared for the one seat in fewer than 10,000 members category (listed in the random order that will appear on the ballot):
  • Jennifer Stedt, North Star CU
  • Nicholas Mathiowetz, NorthRidge Community CU
  • Mary Matheson, Wakota Federal CU
  • Caitlin Brama, Farm Credit Employees FCU

​Ballots are being distributed by email and mail to eligible voting representatives and are due to the teller no later than 4:30 p.m. CDT by April 1, 2024.

The results of the election will be announced at the Minnesota Credit Union Network Annual Business Meeting, to be held on Thursday, April 18 during ACCELERATE 24, the Annual Conference at the Mystic Lake Center. The meeting will be part of the first General Session at 10:00 a.m. in the Waconia Ballroom.

Members not registered for the ACCELERATE conference, may attend the Annual Business meeting portion of the conference for free by selecting the "Annual Business Meeting Only" option to register.
