Compliance and Regulatory Updates: Feb. 1, 2023

NCUA Ends In-Person Exception for Virtual Board Meetings: In November 2021, the NCUA issued its third letter to Federal Credit Unions (FCUs) clarifying that it ended the exception for in-person quorum rule for board and annual meetings as of December 2022. 

​Member Expulsion Policy: The right to expel a member is statutory and subject to your credit union's Bylaws for State Chartered Credit Unions. The NCUA’s final rule on member expulsion is pending for Federal Credit Unions.

Credit Union Advocates Share the CU Difference at the State Capitol

Last week, over 100 credit union professionals and board members from across the state gathered in-person at the Minnesota State Capitol for IMPACT 23: CU Day at the Capitol. ​This important advocacy event forms the foundation for a positive working relationship with legislators throughout the Legislative Session. 

​Speakers for the morning session included:
  •  State Senator Jordon Rasmussen met with the CREW Young Professionals,
  •  State Representative Kaohly Her spoke to the Grassroot Coordinators,
  • Former State Representative Jim Davnie joined MnCUN Director of Governmental Affairs Ryan Smith for the session, "Legislators are People, too," and
  • House Speaker Melissa Hortman, House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth, and Assistant Minority Leader Zach Duckworth addressed the general session.

In the afternoon, credit union staff and board members met with legislators to discuss legislative priorities and credit unions role in promoting financial well-being and investing in local communities.

Spring Peer-to-Peer Schedule Announced

Save the date for our Peer-to-Peer (P2P) sessions this spring!  The P2P sessions will remain virtual, offering credit unions from across the state the opportunity to learn from one another, share knowledge and resources, and build connections. 

​This year, MnCUN is offering a credit union P2P subscription option, giving access to all P2P sessions for any staff at a credit union throughout the year. Any affiliated credit union may subscribe to the P2P program through a one-time, annual payment. The P2P subscription will come with a discount code unique to your credit union for registration at any of the P2P sessions throughout the year.

CCUFC Tristate Virtual Roundtable

Nominations Open for 2023 Professional, Director of the Year

The Minnesota Credit Union Network is now accepting nominations for its most prestigious awards. Now is your chance to nominate a colleague for the 2023 Outstanding Professional of the Year or Outstanding Director (formerly Volunteer) of the Year.

​The winners of these awards will be recognized with a video tribute during the Minnesota Credit Union Network's annual conference - the ACCELERATE 23 Conference, which will take place April 13 &14 at the Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington.
  • Outstanding Professional of the Year recognizes the notable service of one outstanding credit union professional who has selflessly given time, effort and talent to the support and promotion of the credit union mission and who has gone above and beyond to improve the credit union culture in Minnesota.
  • ​Outstanding Director (formerly Volunteer) of the Year is given to one extraordinary credit union board member who best exemplifies the credit union spirit through dedication to, and belief in, the credit union movement. Grounds for nomination include involvement in the credit union movement at local and state levels and participation in other activities that support the credit union mission.

Nominations for the awards must be received by the Network by Tuesday, Feb., 28 by 5 p.m. Complete information and online nomination forms can be found on the MnCUN website.

The Credit Union Consumer Awareness Initiative continues to evolve to bring credit unions additional value and ROI for their marketing investment, and more ways to engage with consumers. Confirm your Credit Union’s Participation in the 2023 Minnesota Consumer Consideration Initiative by completing the 2023 Awareness Contribution Form by January 27, 2023. 2023 program updates include: 
  •  New subscription levels and pricing structure to ensure long term sustainability of the program,
  •  Customizable credit union listing on the Your Money Further website to increase engagement,  presence, and tracking capabilities,
  •  Fresh and evolving creative assets and content that can be leveraged in your credit union’s marketing programs, and
  • Additional opportunities to engage locally with out of home and event strategies coordinated by MnCUN.

Five Minnesota Credit Unions Recognized for CUNA Awards

The 2022 recipients of the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award, and Desjardins Awards for Financial Education were honored in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 24. 

Congratulations to the following member credit unions for their winning entries:
  •  Dora Maxwell $250M-1B: Ideal CU - Honorable Mention
  •  Desjardins Adult $250M-1B: TopLine Financial CU - Honorable Mention
  •  Desjardins Youth $1B+ in assets - Altra FCU - 1st Place
  •  Desjardins Youth $50-250M: HomeTown CU - 2nd place
  •  Louise Herring $50-250M: Northridge Community CU - Honorable Mention

“The Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring, and Desjardins national award winners illustrate how credit unions live the “people helping philosophy” through their everyday operations, community service and education,” MnCUN President & CEO Mark Cummins. “We are so proud of our members leading the way among credit unions nationally with programs that improve their members’ financial well-being.” 

The awards, which are given in multiple credit union asset sizes, were selected among state-level winning entries to compete nationally. Winners will also be recognized at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington D.C., February 26 to March 2, 2023.
